Read all the latest news in the room and I am glad for all the good news on Daniel and family. I think that I may have to shut down my computer in the next day or so. One more day to get all the big stuff down. That means this too! So I'll be out of contact for awhile. All my Gen records are packed away now. The work shop is a nightmare yet. My friend said to just take what tools and such I need and leave the rest. What do I need with 10 different size of nails! LOL Thanks for letting me ramble on in the room. Take care. love Guk
Have fun moving and good luck. The fun part will be deciding where to put everything in the new place. Takes me about 4 months to finally get it how I want it! I have moved a Lot.
Good mornin' all. CDMOM got home from hospital yesterday afternoon, still under the weather. Thanks to all for the well-wishes. Don't know when she'll be back on to read them but I let her know ..... also, my kitty has spent 2 days at the emergency vet clinic & we can bring him home at end of work day today.
I started posting but had to stop while the 21 gun salute was starting for Pres. Ford's funeral. Got wrapped up watching the broadcast till the motorcade started. .... well folks, the holidays are over now :-( I took tree decorations off last night, will be taking down the rest of the stuff today... kids went back to school this morn after being home since Dec. 23.
good luck w/ the move. Can imagine how busy you are but must be a little exciting :)
Thanks for the post and you are right about the confusion in the records of Irish immigratants. With my grandpa family tradition gives one story and dates and census has another entirely. In addition an earlier house fire and later daughter-in-law who never knew him destroyed all his personal effects! But, I'll keep looking and will probably never know for sure.... Thanks again and I'll appreciate everyone keeping an eye out for my John O'Brien.
Find-A-Grave has 2 recent obituaries for Pres. Ford, from the San Francisco Chronicle ~ http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/headlines.cgi
Always borrow money from a pessimists-they dont expect to get it back. Today I am researching the TATTON surname. Mostly in New Brunswick, Canada.
Yep, I also took down tree and all..I actually did it before New Years eve!!Never before.....but we still do NOT have any SNOW..!!? its still green...that is odd for NY in Dec..I mean none 0..nada.....we had a trace once..thats all....I to got wrapped up in Pres.Foeds funeral.. I always do, no matter who the Pres.was..just do...
your JENKINS..I saw John & Mary & kids starting w/ 1850 thru 1870 Chateaugay NY. Also saw where you submitted corrections for Rozilla (SARGENT/SEARGENT) and John JINKINS.. so know I found the right family LOL. Last thing I can find on the son John so far is he's listed on the 1890 VETERANS SCHEDULE as a Civil War survivor, served as Private 1865-1866. Do you have that info yet? If you don't or can't access, I'll post back w/ the Co. & dates.
oh ya, I did see son John JENKINS as the 1st child (16 y.o.) in 1850 w/ parents & 2 sibs Ralph (11) and Charles (9), all were b. in Ireland..... know you have all this & the following, John & Mary were on 1850/60/70 Chateaugay censuses (didn't see after that.. did u?) .... son John & wife Rozilla & kids on 1870/80 Chateaugay censuses.. Rozilla (SARGENT) while single in 1860 (know you have also).
same here in CT, only 'trace' of snow once. They said we tied the 1927 record for least amt of snow for Dec. in CT. Normally our average would've been 8.5 inches for Dec.... I'm not complaining!
No,I'm not complaining either...but wondering if we will pay for this later.? Like in May:)..oh well, its nice now, in fact almost 50 and sunny here right now.
I think this is him, listed in Ancestry.com's AMERICAN CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS database - Name: John Jenkins , Enlistment Date: 22 March 1865 - Distinguished Service: DISTINGUISHED SERVICE - Side Served: Union - State Served: New York - Unit Numbers: 1470 1470 - Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 22 March 1865 at the age of 24 - Enlisted in Company G, 193rd Infantry Regiment New York on 22 March 1865. - Mustered out Company G, 193rd Infantry Regiment New York on 18 January 1866 in Harper's Ferry, WV

Yes,that is him but I need to find him in 1900 census because that census gives year of immigration to US. I got in touch w/town clerk in Thetford,VT and she just emailed me she found Rozilla Jenkins (his wife) died 1899 and John (d) 1902 so he must be in 1900 census somewhere in Thetford area. Thanks for your help. How is CDMom doing!
The Jenkins (John and Rozilla and kids John and Charles) moved to VT by 1892. At that time their daughter Ina May Fury died in Canada and her obit mentions her father John of Thetford,VT. The elder John and Mary stayed in Chateaugay. Mary (d) about 1881 and John went to live w/married daughter Mary Harrica. It gets confusing because there were 3 John's, one in each generation. John and Mary, John and Rozilla, John William and Leta Hill Jenkins. The third one went by Will so not as confusing.
There was also a Charles in generation two and generation three and several Ina's. Only one Ralph ever tho.

How're you feeling today Leagen? Hope you are all off to a running start finding ancestors this new year! Donna, how's your mom doing? Kit, how are you? Do you have a sick pet?
Kit, thanks so much for link, I'll check it out for sure! Wow I can't believe you still haven't found Harold :-( ... Marge, I talked to CDMom about 7 PM yesterday but not yet today. She was very uncomfortable but waiting it out I guess...oh ya, you weren't kiddin' when you said way back on those ancestors, wow! Hope you can dig up more, will keep eyes peeled.
I know, couldn't find John in 1900 either. Did notice that Rozilla's earlier sibs were b. in VT but she & another (later) were b. in NY. Did the SARGENT family move back to VT? Would that be why John & Rozilla went from Chateaugay NY to Thetford VT?... think we might find John w/ SARGENT family in 1900 Thetford?
Did you have a Samuel CAMPBELL in Chateaugay NY? This one's on same pg. of 1890 Veterans Schedule in Chateaugay as John JENKINS.. this CAMPBELL served in a Wisconsin regiment for 3 yrs of Civil War but was living in Chateaugay at time of that 1890 enumeration.
Feeling some better today. Have appointment w/chiropractor for Ultrasound therapy tomorrow, that usually works for me on pinched nerves. I quit the pain meds because they made me feel funny as they r nicotic and addictive, taking Tylenol.
No, the Sargents all stayed in NY. Rozilla was actually (b) in NY . On earlier census some of her older sibs were (b) in VT and younger in NY. Roz's parents were born: father in Mass. and mother in VT., but they were in NY by 1820 and her parents never left. Don't know Why Roz and John moved to VT but so did the Hill family also from Chateaugay and Roz and John's son John William (called Will) (m) Leta Leona Hill daughter of Enoch and Mina who all moved from NY to same area of VT. Guess they all knew each other in NY and for some reason decided to moved together to VT. I have been to the house Enoch built in NY where Leta was born. It is still a working farm.
No Campbell's in my family I know of.
John Jenkins wasn't w/his son's Will or Charles in 1900. They lived next door to each other then. He had no other living kids as dau. Ina had (d) in Canada in 1892/93. He had one living brother then, Ralph who I think was in NY then but had moved back and forth between NY and St. Albans,VT and ended up being buried in St.Albans,VT. I'll check to see exactly where Ralph was in 1900 and if John was w/him. Thanks for all your help. I really need to find John in 1900 to find date he came to US from Ireland.
Susannah Watson ALLEN, born May 1700 in New Kent Co. VA married Hutchins BURTON, Sr. on 31 Mar 1719 in New Kent Co. VA and died in 1771. Who were Susannah's parents?
John LOONEY married Elizabeth LLEWELLEN abt. 1690 in Ballagilley, Isle of Mann, Ireland. Name LOONEY later was changed to LUNA by many of the family.
Jonathan OSBORNE, born 27 Mar 1697, married Beulah ??? on 28 Jul 1748. Their son: Ephriam OSBORNE, born 21 Aug 1723 died 1796 married Sarah FISKE.
Brother Ralph Jenkins and wife Francis Brooks Jenkins were living in NY 1900. And he says to US 1853 which I know is wrong as I found the entire family in 1850 census in Chateaugay. So even if I find John His date of immigration might be wrong too. John wasn't w/Ralph or near in 1900. I really think John was in VT near his sons in Thetford.
Robert Cager BRASHEARS, born 19 Feb 1703/04 in Prince George Co MD died Jul 1786 in Rocky Springs, NC. He married Charity McDOWELL on 02 Feb 1725/26. She was born 04 Apr 1711 in Anne Arundel Co MD.(Thanks, that's all for now!)
yup, but at least we know they came to U.S. before July 20, 1850 (enum. date of 1850 census). And now you at least have a YOD for both John & Rozilla. We'll keep looking... and best of luck @ chiropractor visit!
hmm, guess I'll check archives to see who had CAMPBELL recently... sorry, LOL
This shows u how Confused people were back then. I found Ralph and Francis Brooks Jenkins' son in 1900 Chateaugay,Luke B. Jenkins and wife Margaret w/dau. Dorathy E. Jenkins. (Luke is Lake B. in Index) Luke was (b) July 1874 and He says He was (b) in Ireland w/father (b) Ireland (True) and mother (b) VT. Well, Luke was born and raised right there in Chateaugay. Ralph and Francis never went to Ireland for Luke's birth. So the census can help only so much.
it was NJR who was looking for Andrew B. CAMPBELL in Buffalo NY .. a few days back. Guess she couldn't find him after 1920 census... so wrong Campbell, right state LOL
I have info on the Jenkins family immigration and every one of them say they came to US in different years and father John (husband of Mary) says He came after 1850 too. I thought if I found son John in 1900 I could put all the different immigration dates together and get an average of when they actually did come. Son Charles H. had (d) in 1888 in Ohio never (m) and daughter Eliza is elusive and dau. Mary Harrica was (b) in Chateaugay so none of them will help. It all depends on John and Ralph.
several surnames there. Is LLEWELLYN a variation of LLEWELLEN? Seems I've seen the 'yn' quite often.
I need to find Someone who has Ancestry access to Canadian records to search because I think father John Jenkins and Mary and kids, John, Charles H. and Ralph (maybe w/dau. Eliza A. (b) ca 1842/43 in Ireland) might have come to NY via Canada so need to check for them around Montreal area before 1850. Chateaugay,NY is right on the boarder and near Noyans and Clarenceville,Canada at top of Lake Champlain and one of the girls ended up there and I know there was a lot of (m) between the Canadians of that area to people in Chateaugay.
I just remembered something from a letter I got years ago from a now dead relly. She said John died in a soldiers home in Bennington,VT! So I will check there in 1900.
oooh bet Bennington's the key! X-ing fingers & toes!
I must give praise to people in the genealogy community. I posted requests at 3 sites today, one w/town clerk in Thetford for death of John Jenkins and all have Already answered. One lady has a book of all deaths in Thetford for a long period of time and just sent email w/every Jenkins listed in the book. All my family is there right down to my Aunt. People who love genealogy are such nice and helpful people.
I checked 1900 Bennibgton and still didn't find John. His age from the cemetery is off from most other records. It says he was 65 in 1902 making him (b) 1837. I noticed in other census he lists different (b) dates too but in earliest (1850) he is 16. The 1837 (b) year fits one of his brothers in earlier census. I think people weren't as concerned about their age then. And maybe whoever gave the info at time of his death wasn't sure of John's age.
Yes, I think LEWELLEN, LEWELLYN, and LEWELLING are probably all the same name. One of my GURLEY cousins married a John LEWELLING in late 1800. But, I don't know of a connection with the earlier family.
David RIGGS married the daughter of Joseph BLAINE.Their daughter, Rebecca RIGGS, born 01 Jan 1772 married John BOYD.
Richard HARRIS married Priscilla HOLMES. Their daughter, Mary HARRIS, born 1770 in Granville Co., NC died 04 May 1831 in Bedford Co. TN. She married Elijah PARKER.
Thanks for the kind thoughts! I am sure that it will take me a hold year. I think that I will put out just what I want and the rest can go bye bye. I just about had the PUD guy decided for me when to shute down. Good thing that I had spotted him out in the yard! Would had had no lights and heat until I left on this coming Saturday. Yeaks!!!
Thanks for the infor where the old soldier home was in VT. There was the one ancestor who was there as Civil War Vet. One of his sons had been let out for adoption. That boy became my Grandma's Father. There was speculation just why the Mon had to give up her boy. Back in the day with out much in way of welfare as they have today, there was very little choice.
Did you see Ralph JENKINS' Civil War Pension card? He served in 2 diff. Cav. units which are stated on the card, he filed as Invalid in 1880 or 1890 (hard to read), and his wife 'Frances F. JENKINS' filed as Widow in the state of NY on March 14, 1908. So if you don't have DOD for Ralph yet, it must've been shortly before she filed. ..... and they are in Chateaugay NY on 1900 census.
based on the 1850 Census, I'd say if the ages listed that yr. were correct for John, Mary, John, Ralph & Charles and since all were b. Ireland, they would've emig. BET 1839-1851 (and def. BEF 20 Jul 1850).
that's wonderful about those people helping & so quickly too! More genie-angels... Bless them :)
Have you checked in here today? Sure hope today's been an improvement. [hugs]
you prob. have already?.. Ralph's widow Frances JENKINS (66, b. VT, occup.=Own income) is in 1910 Census in Chateaugay NY, on Harrison Avenue, just her & her granddaughter Frances JENKINS (1 yr & 2 mos, b. NY). Says 4 children but 2 now living for Frances.
Good to see you again...hey, TN. seems to be a popular place to move to...?...all of a sudden, we hear TN instead of NC.
Harold 'Bud' Bettis?? is that BETTIS spelled like Jerome, from the Pttsburg Steelers? Not sure how he spells his name, just liked watching him and the Steelers.)
This is not genealogy, but have you or any of you had this gorgeious full moon the last few nights? It is beautiful and like day light out there.I know they say wierd things happen when there is a full moon, but to me it has been very relaxing and I was up awhile watching it last night.
I have tracked AndrewMOOT b 1858 in NY and married to Mary Holmes. There were in Allegany County until 1920 when they show up in Rochester, Monroe County NY. Andrew is working as a security gaurd in 1920 and 1930. They had one child Vada O. MOOT who was born in 1886 in NY. She is with them as a single child in 1920 in Rochester working in a perfume factory dealing with packing bottles. She is not with the parents in 1930. I can't find her...
frequent use of maiden name for middle inital should give this one a second look. Same county in NY and approximate birth is the same. Vada M Brands Home in 1920: Scio, Allegany, New York Age: 32 years Estimated birth year: abt 1888 Birthplace: New York Relation to Head of House: Wife Spouse's name: Marvin M Father's Birth Place: New York Mother's Birth Place: New York Marital Status: Married Race: White Sex: Female Able to read: Yes Able to Write: Yes Image: 43 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Marvin M Brands 30 Vada M Brands 32 Alda I Brands 3 10/12 Leland M Brands 2 7/12 Lyle L Brands 1 0/12
Yep, TN is a hot choice for relocating right now! We're presently being overrun by folks wanting out of FL! Biggest draw is more reasonable real estate prices and no state income tax, but sales tax is almost 10%!
Humm. thinking about that post. Vada is in 1920 with parents at age 30, but you give her birth as 1888. she should be 32. What I listed below was also from 1920. wonder if she was listed twice. Perhaps married a widower. Nope... not that. the BRANDS census was Jan 6 and the MOOT census was in April. not the same person
1900 census gives Vada's birth as Feb 1886 age is given 14. 1910 give her birth about 1887 her age is listed as 23. and the 1930 gives her age as 30. With a birthday in Feb the 14 and 24 ages are within reason for difference. the 1930 is about 3 years off. Will keep looking
I had her birth date as 1886 and in all the census I found her she was single and with her mom and dad. I guess there are two choices for her, she either married or died. I will go back and look at that 1930 census and see if she is on the page with her parents and married. I took a look at what cemeteries they had listed on usgenweb, but did not see her. Her parents are buried in Allegany County but no dates are given.
that should be 1920 not 1930 in that last post.
this is consistent with the age given in 1920. Vada Wheaton Home in 1930: Rochester, Monroe, New York Age: 40 Estimated birth year: abt 1890 Relation to Head of House: Wife Spouse's name: Harry G Occupation:Education:Military Service:Rent/home value:Age at first marriage:Parents' birthplace: View image Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Harry G Wheaton 38 Vada Wheaton 40 Irene Wheaton 12
Her parents are both 69 in the 1930 census, I am sure she would be taking care of them unless she had died or married. Her father was still working in 1930 at age 69 as a guard at the board of educ.
Where did you find her..how did you do it?
Vada is with her parents in 1920 and in the perfume factory. Is she was with Wheaton it is listed in 1920 and 1930 so it could not be her.. But that name Vada is really strange or let's say unusual.
those are as close as I can find ... the place of her parents birth are correct age, while not consistent with 1900/1910 it matches up with the 1920.
did a search with just the name Vada with living in and born in NY. there are quite a few, but not so many that you can't dig through. Was going to go outside of NY with the search if necessary
So in 1930 she is in the same town as her parents but married.. She could take care of them or at least keep an eye on them that way.
Could she have been in both census one time with parents in 1920 and then the same year with Mr. Wheaton?
with a 12 year old child, this may not be her. The age, city and county is correct and age consistent with 1920, BUT unless she was visiting parents in 1920 and the census taker did not ask for details something is off a bit. Vada Wheaton married at age 27, the child would have been born about 2 years later. it might be worth looking into a death or marriage certificate. Need to look more closely
YES. has happened many a time. we need to look at WHEATON in 1920
found them in 1920. Harry Wheaton Home in 1920: Rochester Ward 12, Monroe, New York Age: 28 years Estimated birth year: abt 1892 Birthplace: New York Relation to Head of House: Head Spouse's name: Vada Father's Birth Place: New York Mother's Birth Place: New York Marital Status: Married Race: White Sex: Male Home owned: Rent Able to read: Yes Able to Write: Yes Image: 358 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Harry Wheaton 28 Vada Wheaton 29 Eleanor I Wheaton 2 1/12
This gives me some leads. I naver thought of only putting in the first name, but guess having a name like Vada is helpful.
1920 WHEATON census was taken on 14 Jan....MOOT was taken on 16 April. she could have easily been counted 2 times. and full details not given when they stated she was daughter, just listed her with parents last name. bears checking cuz its really close.
heading off to spend some time with a book before I crash. Good Luck
first name search works well with unusual names, forget it for most searches. I have used it to find married daughters a few times.
Yes, have a great night. Ty again.
I didn't know about a grand-daughter for Ralph and Francis also named Francis. I really haven't traced their family much. I know of their son Luke and that both Ralph and Francis r buried in St. Albans,VT.
I found their graves at that cemetery site everyone here raves about. Find-a-grave.
