Enumerators often spelled names as they heard them or thought they heard. Also the way people pronounced their names made a difference. My wife's g-grandmother's name is Regina but she was from Germany and the enumerator spelled her name as Ragena based on the German pronounciation.

Let me state this query another way. All the information which I had on Edward Ruggles COONLEY show that he was b 5 Nov 1822 in Delaware CO., NY. I have just discovered some other information re Ed R COONLEY, he was found on the 1850 census, in Coxsackie, age 28, NY. Seeing that he was b in 1822 & he was found on a 1850 census at age 28, this makes sense. Seeing that Coxsackie is in Greene CO.(I believe)would there be any obvious place to look for a birth certficate for Edward Ruggles COONLEY? I find him mentioned being born in Delaware CO. I have also found him as being born in Seneca, Seneda,NY. I do not know NYS, so wouldn't know where to write to.

To those who are familiar with NYS. Is Coxsackie in Greene CO.? I am finding that my GGrandfather was b in Delaware CO., NY & then I find that he was b in Seneca, NY. Finally I him in Coxsackie, NY..age 28 at that time. I believe the Coxsackie is correct, but that doesn't help me with where he was born.

more stuff... I've just read a lot of your postings online re: STADTHER(R) and HUPP, etc. and definitely see your dilemma & why. Also saw the Margaret V. STADTHERR you mentioned who d. 1954 in San Mateo listed on the CA Deaths 1940-97 (whose birth yr I think ? happens to be approx 2 yrs after the Edward F.'s -which would match the 1930 Census data [see my post below] and both sources say her birthplace CA & his was MN) ...and I'll bet you're right that the Margaret V. and Vivian M. really are the same person. But still... how to prove, hmmm. You just may find her name recorded differently on diff. documents, like I have with 2 of my relatives. A half-sister of my gmother, whom my mother and I both knew, was shown on some of her earlier records as Rebecca Eliza FOYE, and R. Elizabeth FOYE and later being married as Elizabeth R. CLIFFORD and Elizabeth F. CLIFFORD. (The F must've been for maiden name rather than middle!).. driving me nuts finding records.... then my gmother herself was born as Hattie Mabel WHITCOMB, but later as an adult she had ALL her records stating she was Harriet (which she just decided on her own to do!) We also think her sister started 'going by' the name of Elizabeth because she hated her given name Rebecca, thought Elizabeth was classier & just switched them all on her own! And both of these sisters were born within just a few yrs of your Vivian HUPP.... maybe it was just a fad back then, maybe a lot of people switched/changed their names whenever they felt like it, who knows :-) Sure doesn't make it easy for our research LOL.
