check other census and see what they say maybe? or other forms of records. back then, the census takers wouldn't always get the info correct. they may have asked a neighbor or a relative, as the person you are referring to may not have been at home. This is just something i've heard about census' back then, in my research.

Information regarding his residency in Buffalo, NY came from his daughter. The other info came from 1880 census & that's where it said he was b 'somewhere' in PA. Is there any way just to go to PA & look for a general census in PA..'somewhere'??? I would use the b year of 1835-38.

have you checked buffalo's census?
on the 1880 census that you looked at, did it give any info, or was it just an index of names?

Hi Ken, Noticed your post from the other night. I am also searching IA..Franklin Co. & Linn Co. Since you are looking for information on your family, for the dates 1870-1880, have you tried the census for 1880..it's online now. Believe 1880 was put out by LDS. Also you could try the IA-CENSUS-LOOKUP-D-request or you could try IOWA-D-request@ rootsweb.com Both of those IA sites are Lists & you have to subscribe to them. If you want to ask any questions, I'm sure there would be someone in this chat room who could answer them for you. You are welcome to write to me..either way which you feel most comfortable with.
